Gelderhost Mockup

The centre for elderly Deaf people

Gelderhorst is a unique care centre, which is fully equipped for older deaf people. Thus, sign language is also the spoken (or sign) main language within the organisation. Sign language is the connecting factor in everything they do.

The task

The challenge was to design a new version of the site that was more visually appealing and user-friendly. Major strides had to be made in accessibility according to WCAG 2.1 guidelines.

Branding

Brand recognition through colours & typography

To build the visual style of the project, we reduced the brand’s colour palette to two colours that match the organisation’s values and contribute to a recognisable and professional look.

We chose the IBM Plex Sans font for its high readability and professional look.

Dark mode

Better readability with dark mode

When developing the new website, accessibility was a key pillar. One of the solutions to maximise this was a dark mode. With a contrast score of 18.42 (5 stars according to the WCAG), this mode ensures that all content can be read as clearly as possible by the visually impaired.

HEX: #0D2627

RGB: 13, 38, 39

CMYK: 67, 3, 0, 85

Implementation of Dutch sign language

One of the challenges was implementing Dutch sign language in the website. This was tackled by building in the ability to add sign language videos to content anywhere in the website via the CMS, which is shown directly to visitors via the frontend.

Direct integration with Readspeaker ensures that texts can be read aloud to visually impaired people.

ReadSpeaker passed the WCAG 2.1 AA compliance test.

The multi-site installation allows Gelderhorst to manage both the main site, and the work-by site from a single environment.

With the separate work-at-home site, the candidate journey has been optimised and there is a smart link to AFAS Outsite.

Smart flexible layouts allow pages to be built independently through the CMS.

When we build a custom website, manageability is a key pillar.

Result

We transformed an outdated brand identity into a unique, contemporary look and feel. The highlight was seeing the positive impact on Gelderhorst, including better recognition, more interaction, more job applications ánd better accessibility.
