Are you curious about how to use a Web image in WordPress? Suppose you want to hire a WordPress agency to make your website faster, then you can certainly benefit from reducing the file size of the images. This can really save you a lot. Images often take up half of a web page. Just a few improvements can help. And that is where WebP comes in. In this article, web agency Mediabirds tells you all about WebP and how you can apply it in WordPress. Read on for more information.

What is WebP?

What exactly is WebP? WebP is also known as the image format that was created by Google to optimise better than popular image formats. For example, you have JPEG, PNG or JPG. WebP is like that, but different. WebP focuses on reducing the file size, while maintaining the same display quality. By making the images smaller with WebP, you certainly don’t lose quality. You can offer website visitors the same experience and benefit from a higher loading speed on your website.

Which web browsers support WebP?

However, the web browser of the person visiting your website must support WebP images. They will not work otherwise. Currently, WebP support is more widespread. For example, WebP images are already supported by several browsers, including Chrome, iOS and MacOS Safari, Firefox, Opera and Microsoft Edge.

How big are WebP images?

Now you must be wondering about the approximate size of WebP images. Our webdesign agency did some research for you and found out that WebP images are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEG images. Also, WebP images are 26% smaller than PNG images.

How to apply WebP in WordPress?

What is the best way to apply WebP in WordPress? If you are using WordPress 5.8, you can use the WebP image setting in the same way as you use GIF or other image types. The first thing you do is download your images to your media library. Then you add them to your content. WordPress 5.8+ supports the WebP format by default. This means that you do not need to install another external plugin when uploading WebP images. In most cases this is more than sufficient. However, it is also possible to use a WordPress plugin if you convert the original images to WebP format.

If the visitor’s browser does not support WebP, you can also provide the original images as a fallback. When you upload a JPEG file to your site, the plugin will convert it into a WebP file. It will then become a WebP file for Chrome, Edge and other browsers. It will also show the original JPEG file to users who have browsers that do not support WebP. This way, anyone can view the image and get the best possible user experience.
